Stabilizer Rigidity in Irreducible Group Actions
We consider irreducible actions of locally compact product groups, and of higher rank semi-simple Lie groups. Using the intermediate factor theorems of Bader-Shalom and NevoZimmer, we show that the action stabilizers, and all irreducible invariant random subgroups, are co-amenable in some normal subgroup. As a consequence, we derive rigidity results on irreducible actions that generalize and st...
متن کاملRigidity for convergence group actions Preliminary version
Suppose G is a hyperbolic group whose boundary ∂∞G has topological dimension k. If ∂∞G is quasi-symmetrically homeomorphic to an Ahlfors kregular metric space, then, modulo a finite normal subgroup, G is isomorphic to a uniform lattice in the isometry group Isom(Hk+1) of hyperbolic (k+1)-space.
متن کاملActions and irreducible representations of the mapping class group
Let G be a countable discrete group. Call two subgroups H1 and H2 of G commensurable if H1 ∩H2 has finite index in both H1 and H2. We say that an action of G on a discrete set X has noncommensurable stabilizers if the stabilizers of any two distinct points of X are not commensurable. We prove in this paper that the action of the mapping class group on the complex of curves has noncommensurable ...
متن کاملFirst Cohomology, Rigidity and Deformations of Isometric Group Actions
In 1964, Weil gave a criterion for local rigidity of a homomorphism from a finitely generated group Γ to a finite dimensional Lie group G in terms of cohomology of Γ with coefficients in the Lie algebra of G. This note announces a generalization of Weil’s result to a class of homomorphisms into certain infinite dimensional Lie groups, namely diffeomorphism groups of compact manifolds. This give...
متن کاملEntropy, Smooth Ergodic Theory, and Rigidity of Group Actions
This is a preliminary version of lecture notes based on a 6 hour course given at the workshop Dynamics Beyond Uniform Hyperbolicity held in Provo, Utah June 2017. The goal of this course is two-fold. First we will present a number of tools and results in the smooth ergodic theory of actions of higher-rank abelian groups including Lyapunov exponents, metric entropy, and the relationship between ...
